“The parade was huge, by South Florida standards…Anita Bryant caused a lot of people to stay in the closet longer, but she didn’t stop the gay movement. I had just turned twenty-six and been out for several years already, working with the Dade County Coalition for Human Rights. Was it courage? It was just something I had to do. It was my duty! We were looking forward. It was a period after the election of Harvey Milk but before AIDS.”
